What Is Considered a Confined Space in BC?

A confined space provides limited space for workers to enter and exit. You may enter easily, but exiting from such spaces is challenging. It includes large pipes, underground vaults, or industrial containers. Workers cannot stand up straight or move freely within the space.

Common Hazards Workers Face in Confined Spaces

Toxic gases can trap workers in confined spaces. Low oxygen can cause breathing problems. Meanwhile, harmful chemicals can spread without any noticeable odour. Moving parts or electrical wires can hide in the dark. Flooding or falling materials threaten anyone trapped inside. A lack of proper oxygen can cause problems. Workers also face rescue challenges because rescuing someone from a tight hole requires specialized tools and training. Our confined space training in BC trains you to identify each hazard before entering. Safety Training Okanagan offers confined space training in Kelowna and throughout the Okanagan for workers and employers who need practical, workplace-focused instruction.

Even office staff who develop safety plans benefit from awareness. If your job involves climbing inside a silo, cleaning a sewer, or fixing a boiler, then you should seek confined space training in BC right away.

Confined spaces can be more hazardous than regular workspaces for many reasons. Accidents can happen quickly, often resulting in death. With proper hazard assessments and control programs, you can avoid these incidents.

Our course will help participants understand their responsibilities when working in confined spaces.

Confined Space Training (In-class)

Confined spaces are extremely hazardous workplaces. Accidents happen quickly, often resulting in death. However, proper hazard assessments and controls can reduce or eliminate these hazards. This course explains responsibilities when working in confined spaces. The BCCSA recognizes this Confined Space Entry and Standby Course. The Alberta version of this course was previously the OSSA Confined Space Entry and Monitor. We teach both the Alberta and BC standards to provide proof of competency for most industries in both provinces. Pre-study is recommended, and students can arrange to pick up study materials before the training day.

The learning objective of the Confined Space Course is to ensure students demonstrate and understand the following:

  • Confined Space Program requirements
  • Definition of a Confined Space
  • Training and competency requirements
  • Recognition, evaluation, and control of hazards and completing a hazard assessment
  • Classification of Confined Space Levels
  • Legislation requirements (Safety and Protection)
  • Hazardous Substances and Energy (Isolation)
  • Testing and Atmosphere
  • Ventilation and Purging
  • Neutralization and Inerting
  • Entry Permit System

Awareness Training (Online)

Confined and restricted spaces pose a risk to your health and safety. Therefore, it’s important that you recognize confined and restricted spaces at the work site and identify the hazards associated with them. You also need to understand how to assess, eliminate, control, and monitor those hazards. This course provides knowledge and training to help you stay safe when entering or working around confined or restricted spaces.

  • Definitions of confined and restricted spaces
  • Common confined and restricted space hazards
  • Procedures for assessment, testing, elimination, and control of hazards
  • PPE requirements for confined space entry
  • Permits, logs, communication systems, and emergency response plans for confined space entry
  • Employer, worker, and monitor responsibilities related to confined spaces

Entry and Monitor Training (Online)

This online Confined Space Entry and Monitor course defines confined and restricted spaces, explains their associated hazards, and provides methods for assessing, eliminating, controlling, and monitoring those hazards. The goal of this course is to help you demonstrate basic knowledge and proficiency in the identification, classification, and monitoring of both confined and restricted spaces. This course also covers requirements as described under Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) legislation as they relate to confined spaces.

  • The differences between confined and restricted spaces
  • Classification systems for confined space entry
  • Common confined and restricted space hazards
  • Procedures for the assessment, testing, elimination, and control of hazards
  • Personal protective equipment requirements for confined space entry
  • Permits, logs, communication systems, and emergency response plans required for confined space entry
  • Employer, worker, and monitor (tending worker) responsibilities as they relate to confined spaces
